Hurricane Seasons Begins June 1

HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS JUNE 1st

Hurricane season has begins on June 1 and continues till November 30th 2009. Although South Hackensack rarely sees a sizable hurricane we all should be prepared. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with our state, local and federal partners to increase preparedness and coordinate response and recovery in case of a hurricane or other disaster. FEMA urges all Americans to use the annual start of hurricane season as a reminder to assess your personal readiness.

If you live in a hurricane prone area, ensuring your family is prepared is common sense. We never know when the next hurricane or disaster will strike but we can be prepared. Take the time to review or develop your emergency plan NOW. Even those outside the hurricane risk area should check their personal preparations such as emergency kit supplies (enough to last 72 hours).

Emergency Kit Supplies can be found in another article on this website or by going to www.fema.gov. One thing you should do and that is put all your important documents in a waterproof bag inside a fire safe and be able to take it when you leave, make an out of the area contact and location where your family will meet up.

If your household has a person with a disability, special steps to assist them may be necessary and considered now. Check with your doctor or health care provider. Pets also require special handling. They may become agitated during the onset of a storm, so please have a pet carrier available for safe travel. Pet owners should research pet boarding facilities or pet motels within a radius of South Hackensack or where you will be staying outside the area, since animals are not allowed in shelters due to health reasons.

If you have Flood Insurance or you are looking to purchase it now is the time to look into this valuable resource. Many websites are available both for Pet Shelters and Flood Insurance. One website you can visit is www.floodsmart.gov or call 1-888-379-9531.
