April 1, 2008 - October 31, 2008 Mondays & Thursdays

Rear-Yard Collection

  • Residential Mixed Refuse (no recyclables)
  • Must be bagged and placed in an appropriate receptacle

Curbside Collection Only

  • Household trash such as furniture, boxes, garden refuse, and bagged grass clippings
  • Place at curbside no later than 6:00am on pick-up day

Trash Guidelines

Household Refuse
Must be bagged and placed in an appropriate receptacle.
Branches
Branches must be tied in bundles, no longer than 4' long, and must not weigh more than 50 lbs. All loose limbs that are too small to bundle must be placed in a bag or a box. Any items that are not bundled or bagged will not be collected.
Grass
Grass clippings must be bagged and placed neatly at the curb.
Furniture
Furniture can be neatly placed at the curb. These items will be collected by the garbage contractor.
Appliances - Refrigerators, Air Conditioners, Stoves, Hot Water Heaters
Beginning October 3rd, 2007 discarded appliances will be collected by our trash hauler Ippolito Industries on the 1st Wednesday of each month. Appliances will be separated from from regular trash and recycled. This new service is offered for free by the recycling contractor and reduces the town's dumping costs for household trash. All items are to be placed curbside no later than 7:00am on the day of pick-up.
Wood
Wood must be tied in bundles no longer than 4' long and must not weigh more than 50 lbs. For safety reasons all wood must be placed neatly at the curb and all nails must be removed. Small pieces of wood should be bagged or boxed. Loose pieces of wood should not be placed at the curb.
Windows
Windows should be placed upright at the curb.
Loose Trash
For safety reasons all loose trash must be placed in a bag or a box. No loose items should be placed at the curb.

Residential Clean Ups

For major clean up projects the Township of South Hackensack offers a truck rental program for residents. Please contact the DPW at (201) 440-3283 for more details.

Construction Debris

Construction debris is defined as waste building materials resulting from construction, remodeling, repair or demolition operations performed by a contractor or a resident acting as a contractor. This type of waste is not accepted and must be removed by the contractor or by a private carting firm.

Hazardous Waste

Hazardous Waste such as aerosol cans, paints, pesticides, solvents, and many hazardous items commonly found in the home are not accepted by the DPW. The Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) sponsors several events throughout the year for Bergen County residents.
