Rear-Yard Collection
- Residential Mixed Refuse (no recyclables)
- Must be bagged and placed in an appropriate receptacle
Curbside Collection Only
- Household trash* such as furniture and other non-recyclable items
- Place at curbside no later than 6:00am on pick-up day
* No construction debris, commercial trash/material, or recyclable material will be accepted as trash by the contracted vendor
Recycling
Co-Mingled Recycling Schedule & Regulations
- Curbside Collection - 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month
- Place recyclable items in containers no larger than 48 gallons or weighing no more than 50 lbs *
- Place filled containers at curb no later than 7 am on pick-up day
Acceptable Materials
Co-mingled glass (clear, brown, green), aluminum food and beverage containers, tin/steel soup, food, coffee cans, etc.; plastics #1- #7 as listed below:
- PET (PETE), polyethylene terephthalate: commonly found on 2-liter soft drink bottles, cooking oil bottles, peanut butter jars;
- HDPE, high density polyethylene: commonly found on detergent bottles, milk jugs;
PVC, polyvinyl chloride: commonly found on plastic pipes, outdoor furniture, shrink wrap, water bottles, salad dressing and liquid detergent containers; - LDPE, low density polyethylene: commonly found on dry-cleaning bags, produce bags, trash can liners, and food storage containers;
- PP, polypropylene: commonly found on bottle caps and yogurt containers;
- PS, polystyrene: commonly found on cups, and plastic tableware;
- OTHER, other: This plastic category, as its name of “other” implies, is any plastic other than the named #1-#6, commonly found on certain kinds of food containers, Tupperware, and Nalgene bottles.
Unacceptable
Mirrors, window or auto glass, light bulbs, ceramics, coat hangers, paint cans, tar pails, wire of any kind, electrical equipment, dishes, toasters, general household items.
Paper/Cardboard Recycling Schedule & Regulations
- Curbside Collection by DPW - 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month
- Cardboard must be flattened and tied with string
- Newspaper/junk mail, etc. place in paper bags ONLY
- NO SUPERMARKET PLASTIC BAGS - THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
- Place at curb no later than 7 am on pick-up day
Acceptable Paper/Cardboard
Newspaper, magazines, corrugated cardboard, junk mail, telephone books, paperboard, office paper, colored paper, computer paper, stationery, letterhead, tablet sheets, tab cards, envelopes (with & without windows), file folders, NCR paper, fax paper, calendars, post-it notes, greeting cards, poly-laminated paper beverage containers (orange juice containers) & copy paper including staples & paper clips.
Unacceptable Paper/Cardboard
Soiled paper, trash, plastic, metal, waxed paper, photographic paper, food wrappings, tissues, napkins, paper towels, self-adhesive envelopes, carbon paper, blueprint paper, Tyvek material or Mylar paper, construction paper, hard covered books or chemical containers.
Purchase Recycling Containers
48 gallon containers w/wheels, attached lid and “South Hackensack Recycles” logo will be available for purchase through the public works department for $25.00 each. Since we must pre-order, please contact the DPW at 201-440-3283 or email recycling@southhackensacknj.org to place your order and/or obtain more information. Please be sure to leave your contact information. Deadline for orders: January 31, 2012.
Electronic Devices
Effective January 1, 2011, electronic devices can no longer be disposed of as solid waste (regular garbage), they must be recycled:
